Autopsy: Missing Woman Found Dead Was Probably Strangled

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A woman who was missing last week and later discovered dead likely died from being strangled, according to a tentative autopsy report.

Brenda L. Owens was reported missing by her husband, Robert Owens last week. Police said that after reporting his wife missing, Robert Owens committed suicide by shooting himself in the head on Aug. 18.

Brenda Owens' body was found on Aug. 19 in the Neuse River.

The report from the chief medical examiner's office "found the tentative cause of death as asphyxiation subsequent to strangulation."

A final report will be complete in about six to nine weeks.

At about 4 p.m. Friday, a diving crew found the body of Brenda Owens, 48, in the Neuse River about six miles from the couple's home at

869 Riverbend Road.

Authorities said the couple had been having problems and may have been planning to divorce.
