Man Charged in '97 Slaying of Paratrooper

U.S. Marshals in Kentucky arrested a man wanted for the murder of Spc. Andre Hines near Fort Beragg.

JEFFERSONVILLE, KY. — U.S. Marshals on Monday arrested a man wanted in North Carolina for the slaying of a Fort Bragg soldier in 1997.

Mark Herd was arrested in his car outside his home, Marshal Rich Knighten said.

Herd is charged in the November 1997 killing of Army Spc. Andre Hines, 24. Hines, a paratrooper, was found in his car in a wooded area off Elliott Farm Road.

He had been shotn in the head three times, police said.

Knighten said Marshals in Kentucky had received information Monday morning about where Herd might be and staked out his house. When he left the house and got into his car, they arrested him at gunpoint, Knighten said. he said Herd did not resist.

Marshals did not say where they got the information that led them to Herd.

The army had posted a $5,000 reward for information about Hines' murder.
