Pentagon officials went before the

BRAC commission

on Saturday to discuss plans to close several military bases, including Pope Air Force Base. They argued the plan would not hurt the military and would save $49 billion over 20 years.

Commission members visited Pope Air Force Base twice, and they could take it off the closing list.

President Bush is expected to receive the proposal early next month.
