Posted Updated

SANFORD, N.C. — Sanford police are searching for a man they say kidnapped a woman at gunpoint, stole money from her bank account and then took off in her car.

The episode started about 11:25 p.m. Monday when a woman, Linda Happ, was approached by a man asking to use a phone in the parking lot of the Economy Inn located at 404 Carthage St.

The man then took out a handgun and ordered Happ into her vehicle and told her to drive, police said. During the drive, the man rummaged through Happ's purse and took an undisclosed amount of money.

Happ was then ordered to stop at an ATM where she was ordered to withdraw more money, said Sgt. J. M. Eads of the Sanford Police Department.

Happ was then told to drive back to the Economy Inn, where she was ordered out of the vehicle and the man fled the parking lot in her vehicle, police said.

Police said they are looking for a black man, 5 foot 5 inches in height, approximately 145 lbs, slender build and dressed in a black and white stripe shirt.
