The accident happened at about 7:20 p.m. at the intersection of
Page and Lumley roads
when a van driven by 25-year-old Miguel Vasquez collided with a car driven by 77-year-old James Humphries.
Police said Vasquez, of Fuquay-Varina, was driving east on Lumley Road when he ran a stop sign traveling at about 50 miles per hour.
Vasquez collided with Humphries, who was traveling on Page Road, and Vasquez's van rolled at least three times, witnesses reported.
Vasquez was trapped in the van for about 30 minutes before firefighters with the Durham and Bethesda fire departments rescued him.
He was airlifted to Duke University Medical Center, and his arm was amputated, police said.
A passenger in Vasquez's van and two others traveling with Humphries were treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Police said charges are pending against Vasquez.
