CARY, N.C. — One person was killed late Wednesday afternoon at a construction site in the U.S. 1/64 work zone in Cary, according to the Cary Police Department.

Officials say David Ryback, 35, of Hope Mills, N.C. was killed shortly after 4:30 p.m., when he was run over by a road grader in the median off of U.S. 1.

Investigators said Ryback was working behind the machine when, for some reason, it was put in reverse and rolled on top of him.

Police say Ryback was a soil inspector with a company called S&ME and was doing some work related to the highway project.

The driver of the machine, according to officials, was upset and taken to the hospital. Police said that no charges will be filed in the case.

The accident had caused some traffic congestion on southbound U.S. 1, mostly as a result of onlooker traffic, but traffic was moving normally at about 6 p.m.
