Roof Repair To Blame For UNC Campus Fire

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Investigators say a construction crew doing roof repair sparked a fire on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Flames broke out early Monday morning at the Phillips Hall Annex on Cameron Avenue.

UNC Fire Marshall Billie Mitchell said crews were applying tar with a torch when some of the material caught fire.

The fire burned in the open space above the second floor ceiling and took firefighters nearly two hours to put out the blaze.

The building was unoccupied at the time. One firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion and was treated at the scene. Damage to the building is estimated at $50,000.
