Patients' Attorneys Want More Hydraulic Fluid Samples From Duke Health

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Lawyers for patients caught in a medical mix-up at two Duke University-affiliated hospitals hope to get more samples Tuesday of used hydraulic fluid.

Attorneys already collected one sample from Duke University Health Systems, but they want samples from as many barrels as possible.

Last year, the liquid was poured into 10 detergent barrels and mistakenly used in the cleaning process for surgical tools.

As many as 3,800 patients were affected at two Duke University-affiliated hospitals.

Duke Health says that despite the mix-up, the instruments were sterile, and exposure should not pose a health risk.
