RALEIGH, N.C. — An assistant district attorney, who helped convict a Durham novelist accused of killing his wife, now wants the county's top attorney position.

Freda Black filed papers with the State Board of Elections to run for district attorney in Durham County.

Black may be best recognized as the second prosecutor in the Mike Peterson murder trial.

Black said she was asked to resign when Michael Nifong took over for Jim Hardin.

She is expected to formally announce Friday that she will run against Nifong.
