FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — Lightning is being blamed for a fire that left a family from Fuquay-Varina homeless.

Officials said the lightning struck the roof of the home, starting a fire that spread to the second floor. Two people were inside and neither was hurt. One of the residents was directly underneath where the lightning struck.

"I've never been more terrified in my life once I realized what had happened," said resident Brandon Bridges. "At first, I thought it had struck an outside light and made a boom. Then, we went outside and saw what was going on. This is a disaster."

Three fire departments responded to the blaze. It took 25 firefighters an hour to get the fire under control.
