HOPE MILLS, N.C. — Investigators say lightning was the cause of a Tuesday afternoon fire that sent a firefighter to the hospital.

Firefighters battled a blaze at a vacant house on Batesburg Drive in Hope Mills.

The house sustained extensive damage and the entire roof and attic were destroyed.

The firefighter, whose name is not being released, fell from a 24-foot extension ladder and was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She was expected to be released from the hospital sometime Tuesday evening.
