JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — Both southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Kenly are back open after a single-vehicle accident in Johnston County significantly backed up traffic Wednesday afternoon.

At about 4:30 p.m., Dariese Powell, of Newark, DE, was driving her mini-van near mile marker 106, when one of her rear tires burst, causing her to lose control of the vehicle and hit a guardrail, the N.C. Highway Patrol said. The van then overturned on a median and caught fire.

One person, Cheryl Hampson, was ejected from a wheelchair and rolled onto I-95. She was airlifted to UNC Hospitals, where she was listed in serious condition Wednesday night.

Powell, and two other people, Martin Willeford and William Powell, were all transported to Johnston County Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Highway Patrol said no charges will be filed.
