DURHAM, N.C. — In a late Monday night meeting, the Durham council approved three major development projects that will use public and private funds.

A new performing arts theatre will be placed at the old DATA bus site. The old Woolworth site will become a building with both office and residential options. The expansion of West Village will bring more than 350 residential units to the downtown area.

"It's really heartening for me to see the public and private sector come together," said William Kalkhof, president of Downtown Durham Inc.

Planners expect smaller companies will fill up downtown storefronts after the major projects bring people downtown, but officials admit there is one obstacle.

"The biggest image problem we have to overcome will once again be crime and safety," Kalhkof said.
