RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh man was arrested early Thursday and charged with shooting his neighbor following a squabble over late-night fireworks, police said.
Mark F. Irwin, 22, of 208 Chamberlain St., was shooting off fireworks outside his home with a group of friends shortly before 2 a.m., police said. A neighbor, Christopher H. Barber, 24, asked that the fireworks show come to an end, and he began to argue with members of the group, police said.
The verbal dispute escalated into a physical altercation, and Irwin brought a shotgun out of his house, police said. Barber's brother, John H. Kenney Jr., 18, became involved in the continuing dispute, and Irwin shot him in the right leg, police said.
When Barber tried to help his brother, he was shot in the hip, police said.
Both men were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Irwin was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, police said.
