Former Manager Of Durham Fitness Club Accused Of Embezzlement

DURHAM, N.C. — A former assistant manager of a Durham fitness club was arrested Wednesday on charges that he took money from members who thought they were renewing their club membership.

Keith Karlsberg, 36, who worked at Millennium Fitness on Hillandale Road, was charged with four counts of embezzlement.

He is accused of telling members whose memberships were about to expire that the fitness center was running a special offer, which provided an 18-month membership if the clients paid $299 in cash. According to investigators, Karlsberg gave members contracts after receiving the cash, but the money was never turned over to the business and the contracts were counterfeit.

Chris Zobec, owner of Millennium Fitness, told WRAL Thursday that the memberships involved in the alleged embezzlement would be honored.

Durham police are asking anyone who may have been a victim of the scam to call
