Maryland Man Leads Authorities On I-85 Chase

Posted Updated

HENDERSON, N.C. — A chase that started as a traffic stop in Virginia ended near Henderson.

Investigators say 36-year-old Justin Michael Miller, of Maryland, was being cited for speeding by a officer Tuesday night. During the traffic stop, the officer performed a background check and determined Miller was an escapee from a Maryland jail. At that point, Miller called 911 and made a false report of a car accident in hopes of drawing the officer away from the scene.

Authorities say Miller then drove off down Interstate 85 and was chased by several law enforcement agencies. During the chase, Miller threatened to use explosives and guns against officers.

The chase ended on Highway 39 just off I-85, when Vance County Sheriff Thomas Breedlove and others used stop sticks to get the truck to stop.

Miller eventually surrendered peacefully. There were not any weapons found inside his truck.
