YMCA Program Makes Fitness Fun

Posted Updated

CARY — Children in North Carolina, like those across the country, are getting heavier. The state is responding with a campaign called Be Active KIDS.

Pre-schoolers at the Cary YMCA are on a wild and wacky fitness adventure. They are working out to a program designed specifically for them.

"We're trying to invest early in young children, to develop habits early so that they don't have to change habits later," says Carol Mitchell of Be Active KIDS.

Teacher Nancy Krebs makes it fun by letting the children enjoy themselves while having them exercise. That is the beauty of the program.

Launched last June, child care teachers in 40 counties are already using the Be Active program.

"It is so wonderful. This program has been received so positively from teachers, the providers -- everyone loves it," Krebbs says. "There's enthusiasm from the trainers all the way down to the parents to the children which is the most important thing."

"By doing our exercises, we can make our hearts stronger and healthier," says a young participant.

Be Active creators say it is especially important to reach children, because they will, in turn, educate adults.
