Investigators say William McMannus, who works with Big Daddy Bail Bonds, took $10,000 in bail money from a relative of Isabel Carachure, who had been arrested in January on drug trafficking charges. Police say McMannus never bonded the defendant out of jail.
McMannus was charged with obtaining property by false pretense. He was released from jail on a written promise to appear in court.
Carachure remains in jail and the $10,000 has not been returned to his relative.
Authorities are investigating another similar complaint involving McMannus, but no charges have been filed in that case.
McMannus, who received his bail bonding license in 2003, is also being investigated by the North Carolina Department of Insurance, which is the agency that regulates and licenses bail bondsmen.
