<b>LILLINGTON, N.C.</b> — A Harnett County veteran was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star on Monday.

Perry Lewis served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict.

He risked his own safety in the face of enemy fire to assist his fellow soldiers and to save valuable equipment.

Lewis received his awards during a Memorial Day service at the Harnett County Veterans Memorial Park in Lillington.

According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, a school resource officer discovered the body of a man inside a vehicle at Hobbton High School's athletic field. Authorities believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
