Durham's Lake Clubhouse
A drive-by shooting in Wayne County killed one man and injured four others, including a 6-year-old girl.

Deputies said a birthday party was in progress at the clubhouse at Durham's Lake about midnight when gunmen showered bullets at the building, hitting the victims inside.

Arturo Acevedo, 34, was killed, and the young girl suffered a gunshot wound to the hand. Oscar Ocampo, who is Acevedo's brother-in-law, said that the child is doing well. There is no word on the conditions of the other victims.

Rodney Hamilton, who lives near the clubhouse, told WRAL the party started Saturday afternoon, with dozens of adults and children having fun outside the building. He heard the gunshots later in the evening.

"Boom, boom, boom, boom," Hamilton said as he described the sound. "I said to myself, 'Dang, I hope nobody got killed.'"

Venancio Martinez, 17; Antonio Orterzo, whose age wasn't immediately known; and Armando Laredo, 18, are sought for questioning in the shooting. Authorities are also looking for two other men, but their identities were not immediately known. Investigators said at least one of the suspects has family in Duplin County.

Authorities believe the men are riding in a four-door red or burgundy 1998 Hyundai with North Carolina license plate number WPM-6706. They may also be armed with some type of .223 S/A rifle, authorities said.

Anyone with information in regard to the shooting or the men sought for questioning is asked to call the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office at  919-731-1481.

Good reporting, WRAL! Excellent coverage of a crime and the effect it has on the caring community affected by it. Unfortunately, I see that the comments section is obsessed with the fear of 'illegals' destroying life as we know it (see: dime novels/horror movies/detective magazines/network television/rock and roll/hollywood/video games/internet/etc). I guess xenophobia is not just for breakfast anymore. Comments using terms like 'wetback', to me, show an underlying hatred and serious lack of disciplined knowlege of the issue(s) at hand. And, this one was interesting in a previous post: "So when so many of the mutts from another country..." MUTTS? My ancestors came here from Ireland and Scotland. A bit of research and I found out my heritage is Anglo/Scots/Irish/French/German/Cherokee/Catawba. Guess that makes ME a mutt, eh? ... Oh, and I hate to break the news to you, but the NC Eugenics Board was disbanded a couple of years ago. "Mister Gorbachev! Give us that wall!" (coff)

Well imagine that, and I keep getting told that they are all here just to work.

Wake up people? It does not matter the race, or how they got here. It doesn't matter if they are legal or not. What matters is that these gangs will do whatever whenever they want, regardless of what happens. These article shows that. They shot into a building. They could care less who was in there. It was funny that in Sunday's Newsargus, the Goldsboro paper, there was a big article about gangs in Wayne County. Goverment officals don't know what to do about the problem. This leads me to believe the best thing it to watch out for you and your.

My heart goes out to the families. I see first hand what these situations do to people. No matter where you are from, what color you are, something like this hurts just the same. I work in these situations day after day. It never gets any easier. For those involved it is a life changing experience. How anyone got to this country is not the point. You don't know they were not born in the US. Anyway we took this land. The big problem is that we are too easy on the ones that break the law. Give them hard time & take away some of their rights. But no, we give them more money than we spend on our kids, to teach them. Maybe if we put our money into our kids instead of supporting criminals then maybe we would not be in this type of mess.If we did that, maybe someday we would not be reading about or seeing these kind of things as much.We can all only pray for that to be the case.

First of all, why does every comment up here lead to rascism? Hispanics are not the only ones commiting crimes, what about the white man who killed his own daughter?...now thats a sick man. of course what these young men did was awful, and they should definetly be charged, and if they are illegal, then they should be deported. The point is hispanics cant be blamed for everything that goes wrong within our society. We should all work together as one and stop all these gang activities.
