The school board discussed cutting dental insurance for all of Wake County school system employees. They also talked about eliminating 50 teacher assistant positions and 12 to 14 positions from the school's central office.
County officials said Thursday that it cannot fund $29 million more than last year's budget. As a result, school board members must cut $16 million in new programs, benefits and pay.
"Wake County has high expectations. They shared their expectations with this board and administration and this plan for student success implements what this board has asked for," said school board member Bill Fletcher. "Yes, it does cost a little more extra money than what is currently on the table, but it needs to be funded in full."
"And to all of a sudden say you have to cut this out. We have to cut all this out. I can't live with this," school board member Kathryn Watson Quigg said. "I'm glad I'm going off the board if this happens to this county because it is absolutely the wrong things for children."
A public hearing is scheduled for June 6 before the county commission.
