Pope Air Force Base's Survival May Hinge On Visit

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Pope Air Force Base is getting an important visitor Tuesday.

Retired Adm. Harold Gehman will tour the base. He is one of the nine commissioners who will make recommendations to the president about which bases to close.

His visit will help commissioners learn how Department of Defense recommendations will affect the installation.

The Defense Department wants to turn Pope Air Force Base over to Fort Bragg.

Pope Air Force Base would lose nearly 5,000 military jobs, but Fort Bragg stands to gain more than 4,000 jobs overall.
