HOPE MILLS, N.C. — Social Services officials said an infant surrendered at the Hope Mills fire station last week has a new home and is doing well.
Firefighters said the baby's mother told them she could not handle the responsibility and knew about the state's
Safe Surrender law
.
Officials said "Baby Hope" was about one day old and healthy. Under the Safe Surrender law, which took effect in 2001, the child must be unharmed and under seven days old.
On Monday, the North Carolina State House approved a bill requiring schools to inform students in grades eight to 12 about the Safe Surrender law.
Critics argue that the measure sends the wrong message, but the bill passed almost unanimously. It will now go to the Senate.
