HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A Cumberland County day-care teacher has been fired because of a charge that she abused a 5-year-old student.
Capt. Tonzie Collins of the Hope Mills Police Department said Summer Michelle Curtis allegedly put the boy in the bathroom at Kidd's Daycare on Camden Road. Witnesses reported that Curtis took a cot and placed it against the door so he could not get out after he refused to take a nap.
The boy's mother, Mary Ventura, was a part-time employee at the day care and found out about the incident when she arrived at work last Wednesday.
She said she felt betrayed and immediately contacted Hope Mills police.
"I know them pretty good, and I was just shocked that anything like this would ever happen to my son," Ventura said. Her son had been going to the day care since he was 2 years old.
Investigators said Curtis admitted barricading the child in the bathroom.
She is charged with misdemeanor false imprisonment and misdemeanor child abuse.
Her first court appearance is scheduled for June 14.
