JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — The Johnston County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that occurred Tuesday near Four Oaks.

The sheriff's office said James Hardee, 42, shot his 34-year-old girlfriend in the face around 8 a.m. at a home on Rosie Drive off Heath Road. Hardee, then took the victim's 5-year-old daughter, investigators said.

The sheriff's office said Hardee was taken into custody and will be charged with attempted murder. The child is OK, the sheriff's office said.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital, and then transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where she is listed in serious condition.

Hardee has a criminal record, authorities said, that includes four charges in Johnston County for assaulting women.
