RALEIGH, N.C. — A man driving on Interstate 40 jumped from his moving truck Tuesday afternoon, causing two other vehicles to collide, police said.
Jose Ines Garcia, 22, of Graham, was eastbound on I-40 near Cary Towne Boulevard when he opened the driver's door of his 2003 Ford pickup and jumped out, police said. The truck was traveling about 65 mph in the left lane at the time, police said.
Vehicles driven by William Garrett Smythe and David Allen Dibble, both of Raleigh, collided as they slowed to avoid hitting Garcia in the roadway, police said. Neither driver was injured, and the collision caused minor damage to both vehicles, police said.
Garcia came to rest on the left shoulder of I-40. He was later taken to WakeMed for treatment.
His unoccupied truck continued heading east on the highway, crossing the other two eastbound lanes and striking a vehicle driven by Alice Yvonia Williams of Salemburg, police said. She and her passengers weren't seriously injured, police said.
The driverless truck then headed up an incline and into a wooded area, where it came to rest in heavy brush, police said.
