Chicken Truck, SUV Involved In Lee County Accident

Posted Updated

LEE COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities say a tractor-trailer carrying 4,200 chickens and an sports utility vehicle were involved in an early morning accident on U.S. Highway 1 south of Sanford.

Troopers say a Jeep Cherokee hauling furniture was traveling northbound on U.S. 1 when it tried to slow down. Authorities believe the wet roads may have caused it to cross the center line, hitting the southbound tractor-trailer.

The tractor-trailer ended up on its side, causing the chicken cages to fall off the truck. The chickens were headed to a plant in Siler City.

According to reports, a tire from the tractor-trailer hit another vehicle. All drivers involved in the accident are reportedly OK. They were not taken to the hospital.

Both lanes of U.S. 1 at the accident site were shut down for less than a mile. Traffic was re-routed to a service road.
