CLAYTON, N.C. — A car crash on I-40 left two people lying on the interstate until help arrived.

It happened near Clayton about 6 a.m. Sunday.

Troopers told WRAL-TV that the driver lost control of his car, which flipped four times, throwing the driver and a passenger out of the car and onto the middle of the westbound lanes. The car landed by the side of the road.

Investigators said they were surprised no one hit the victims before paramedics arrived.

They also said neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing their seatbelts.

The victims were sent to WakeMed -- one with life-threatening injuries, troopers said.
