If passed, North Carolina would join 16 other states that have similar lawsuit limits on food products. Some people agreed with the bill's intent.
"People shouldn't be allowed to sue those things because people should pay the consequences of their choices," Ashley Taylor said.
"Personal responsibility is something I hold in high regard and I think it's something that has, sort of, lost its credence among Americans," said Richard Winslow.
However, others said blocking lawsuits against unhealthy food is hypocritical because North Carolina received millions from the federal lawsuit against the tobacoo industry.
"I think that if people can still sue tobacco companies that they have lung cancer or something like that, I think it's a double standard. It doesn't make sense to me," said Kate Schadel.
"If you drink too much water, it will kill you. If you eat too much food, there are negative results because of that, and it's up to each individual to have responsibility to know that overeating causes health problems," said Rep. Bill Daughtridge, R-Nash.
The North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers said it has not formed an opinion about the bill yet.
