Hundreds of people marched about two miles across the bridge -- from Meredith College to the N.C. Museum of Art -- to show their support for the bridge on Saturday.
"Every time, driving down the highway, my daughter's like, 'When are we going to be able to go on the bridge?'" Suzanne Puccio of Raleigh said. "She's very excited and couldn't wait to come to this today."
Construction on the bridge cost about $3.8 million, and not everybody thought it was a good idea to spend that amount of money to build it.
"It's beautiful; it's lovely," Beth Randall of Cary said. "But it seems like an awful lot of money to be spent for how many pedestrians will be using it."
The city of Raleigh and the state of North Carolina are sharing the costs for the bridge.
Though the bridge is open to pedestrians, construction is not yet complete. Raleigh city officials recently approved adding lights to the bridge at an extra cost of $70,000.
