Man Freed After Being Pinned Under Bus

in downtown Durham Thursday morning.

An eyewitness said that around 11 a.m. a man was holding some cash and that a one-dollar bill blew out of his hand just as a bus was coming around a corner at the terminal.

As the man went to chase the money, he came very close to the bus and a bumper from the bus hit the man, knocking him to the ground, the witness said.

As the bus started to go over the man, the front tires pinned the him. The bus stopped while the man was underneath and rescue crews arrived with equipment that allowed them to raise the bus and remove the man.

"He stepped out, he bent over to pick up the money and the bus just came up on to him. It was like when he seen it, he stood up he looked up and hit the glass a few times, and yelled 'Stop, stop, stop!" said David Bouie, who saw the accident. "But the bus hit him and he rolled up under it and ... it sandwiched him. She (the driver) was trying to get it off him, but it apparently wouldn't move."

The victim, William F. Wilson, 62, of Wyldewood Road, was trapped under the bus for about five minutes, witnesses said.

Wilson was taken to Duke Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The bus was driven by Deborah Morgan of Durham, police said. No charges have been filed, but the accident remains under investigation.
