A former custodian for Orange County schools faces serious accusations.

Adam Eugene Smith of Hillsborough is charged with 11 counts of felony sex offense. Investigators believe he had sex with a student at Cedar Ridge High School

Anne D'Annunzio, spokeswoman for Orange County schools, could not give specifics about the case, but she said the relationship is a crime even if the victim consents.

"School employees are not allowed to have that kind of relationship with a student. It does not matter the age. It's completely inappropriate," she said.

Smith was arrested Tuesday and was released after promising to appear in court April 22. Smith started with Orange County schools as a bus driver in August 2001 and became a school custodian in March 2003.

According to arrest warrants, the sexual relationship took place from September to March. The school was recently made aware of the situation when a teacher alerted the principal. Smith was suspended and later resigned in the middle of the month. He was arrested March 29.

District Attorney Jim Woodall said the charges carry potential prison time. Smith was released without bond.
