Heavy Storms Roll Through Triangle

RALEIGH, N.C. — Strong thunderstorms moved through the Triangle Monday morning, bringing high winds, damaging lightning, hail and heavy rain.

A particularly large thunderstorm moved from Harnett County through Wake County and on to Vance County from 7 to 7:45 a.m.

The storm dumped hail that was as large as nearly an inch in diameter in northern Wake County, with isolated areas seeing larger chunks of hail. Other areas saw hail as large as nickels.

There were several car accidents reported during the storms, but no injuries were reported. On wreck was reported on Interstate-40 near Hammond Road. Another accident happened on I-540 near Falls of Neuse Road.

During the storm, severe thunderstorm warnings were sounded for parts of Johnston and Harnett counties and all of Wake and Vance counties.

When storms moved through the area earlier on Monday, a lightning strike caused a house fire in Bahama at 327 Mason Road at about 5 a.m.. Fire officials said the house suffered more than 50 percent damage, but no one was hurt.
