CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Investigators suspect the driver behind a deadly wreck in Cumberland County was drunk.

A grandmother was killed in the head-on wreck Monday afternoon and her granddaughter suffered minor injuries.

According to authorities, a deputy was driving on Camden Road when he saw a Ford Mustang from the opposite direction swerve into his lane, then back into the correct lane and keep going.

The deputy turned around to chase the driver, but the driver had already hit another vehicle. Authorities say the driver of the Mustang also hit another car.

Edna Earle King, 60, of Fayetteville was killed in the wreck. Her granddaughter, Caitlyn Breann Abercrombie, 8, was not seriously hurt.

Authorities say the driver of the Mustang is Russell Bell. He is currently at WakeMed in critical condition.

Charges are pending against Bell. Authorities say they will likely include DWI and driving while license revoked.
