JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A fisherman in Johnston County said he saw a body in a Johnston County creek over the weekend, but an exhaustive search came up empty.
Henry Gooch Jr. was fishing in Black Creek Sunday when he reeled in what he thought was a dead body. Gooch said the sight of it scared him so much that he dropped his rod and went for help.
Dive crews spent Sunday evening and part of Monday searching, but they were unable to find anything.
"If there was something there, we would have already found it," Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said.
Investigators may decide to re-interview Gooch. Bizzell said he will not charge Gooch with filing a false report. Johnston County said it spent $2,500 on its search.
