"My son called one day and said, 'Dad, I've been called to active duty, so I said, 'Find out if they will hire me as your replacement as a sub and I will put in the papers,'" Boyce Harvey said.
"I knew that my students were going to be taken care of," Brian Harvey said.
Brian Harvey, 27, just got back from deployment in Iraq. When he saw what a great job his father was doing, he did not ask for his old job back. Instead, he filled a vacancy at nearby J.F. Webb High School.
Teaching is a family affair for the Harveys. Brian, his father and Brian's brother-in-law all teach in Granville County. Brian's mother is a high school principal in Winston-Salem.
Both Brian and Boyce Harvey said they are richer from their life experiences.
"I have several students I had when I was a teacher at Northern Granville. There were a lot of them who kept up with me while I was gone and sent me e-mails and letters. That really helped me keep my spirits up," Brian Harvey said.
"It gave me more of an incentive to produce some top-quality kids," Boyce Harvey said.
Three members of the Harvey family who work for Granville County schools all specialize in technology.
