Wake Commissioners Vote Against Funding Lease For Site Of Modular School

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County Board of Commissioners voted Monday not to fund the lease for a site for a proposed modular school site.

The school system had planned to put a modular school at the DuBois Center to relieve overcrowding at other schools. The vote, which went 5-2, is seen as a victory for many parents, who opposed the site saying it is too far away and that there is too much crime in the surrounding area.

Commissioners heard from both sides Monday who stated their positions about the proposed modular school site.

"I feel washed out at the moment," said Doug Dieter, who opposed the Dubois Center site. [I'm] certainly happy that they voted the way we hoped they would vote. I feel very, very sad about the amount of things that were brought into this that were never a part of what it was about."

"I think the Wake County School Board is doing the right thing. It's placing the schools in the various communities to help all of the communities and to help the kids first," said Doris Burke, who supports the DuBois Center site.

Two developers have offered land within the Wakefield community, which is closer for most parents. Wake school officials plan to meet Tuesday to discuss what will happen next.

Construction on the modular school must begin May 1 for it to be ready by the beginning of the school year.
