HOKE COUNTY — A 16-month-old boy was killed Saturday afternoon as he tried to cross the street in front of his grandmother's home near Raeford.
Highway Patrol investigators say Cahlil Monroe was playing in the yard when he saw neighbors jumping on a trampoline and bolted across the street to join them. He stepped in front of a car and was struck. He died on the scene.
Monroe's father was in the front yard with his son when the accident happened, but he could not prevent the boy from stepping into the path of the car.
The driver of the car, Lakeisha McGrechy, was not at fault. However, the investigation is ongoing.
