A new wellness center means a healthier future for many people in and around Sampson County.

The facility will offer yearround swimming, a hot tub and exercise equipment.

"We have never had such an extensive array of options, cardiovascular equipment, strength training equipment," fitness director Robin Palmer said.

Some people are also taking advantage of aerobics classes at the wellness center.

"You think you don't have time for this, but I find that I get energized. I go home and just keep moving," 76-year-old participant Alice Rose said.

Rose did not begin the classes because of health concerns.

"I'm here to prevent health concerns," Rose said.

Many wellness center members start as patients from Sampson Regional Medical Center next door. With the new facilities in place, the hospital plans to begin a new cardiac care program.

"As they graduate from the cardiac-supervised program, we hope to transition them over here to the wellness center," said Nancy Thagard, director of the rehabilitation services.

"I think it's the greatest thing that's happened in Sampson County and the area around us," Rose said.

The wellness center also has a new demonstration kitchen, where people can learn about healthier cooking. It is a place where the hospital can reach out in many ways to the health needs of their community.
