Lloyd Coats, 66, is charged with several sex crimes involving 10 alleged victims, and more charges are expected soon. Authorities said some of the cases date back more than 25 years.
Erwin police said Coats would offer children candy along his postal route and then touch them inappropriately. He is also accused of similar crimes when he drove a church van.
When detectives first began investigating, they asked the U.S. Postal Service to prohibit him from delivering mail to a school on his route. The organization is now assisting in the investigation. Coats retired from his job as a postal worker Jan. 3 soon after he was questioned by police.
