On Monday, Department of Transportation crews will start a massive road-widening project on U.S. 1 and Highway 64 near the busy Crossroads shopping complex.
At a meeting at Cary High School Tuesday evening, about 100 residents turned out as DOT engineers announced the start of the project.
DOT engineer Bob Shultes said 90,000 cars travel the road daily.
"We're trying to be honest -- that it's going to be a painful process. We're going be out there for about two years," he said.
The project widens a 3.5-mile stretch between Interstate 40 and Tryon Road and improves the Walnut Street interchange.
The DOT said drivers will notice the most closures, detours and hear the greatest amount of noise at night.
The project is scheduled to be complete in late 2006.
