Judge's Ruling May Jeopardize Red-Light Cameras In N.C.

The judge recently ruled High Point's cameras violate the state Constitution.

The state Constitution said all civil penalties must go directly to schools. Paying contractors to run the systems is against state law, according to the judge.

"I believe and I have told others that the red-light cameras will fall like the Berlin Wall," said attorney Marshall Gurley, who won the Guilford County case.

The case is on appeal, but the ruling could have a statewide impact. Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker said if an upcoming study shows the red-light cameras do not reduce accidents by at least one-third, he will consider taking them down.
