Crews Use Sonar, Dogs To Look For Two Missing In Lake

Posted Updated

LITTLETON, N.C. — Search-and-rescue crews returned to Roanoke Rapids Lake in Halifax County to search for two people whose car ended up in the lake Wednesday night.

Authorities said the car was apparently drove off the end of the road and into the lake.

The search for Damian Hawkins, 14, and Clinton Harmon Jr., 20, is centered near the boat ramp where the car went into the lake.

The Roanoke Rapids Rescue Squad pulled Jermaine Whitaker, 30, out of the water Wednesday night. They said he was cold, but not hurt.

Rescuers believe the two others in the vehicle floated downstream. That is where divers are using sonar and underwater cameras to try to find them or any of their belongings.

The major part of the search focused near the boat ramp where Hawkins and Harmen were last seen.

"The way the water is flowing, we have to follow certain patterns in the water," said Sgt. J.D. Dotson, of the state Highway Patrol.

Recovery crews also used tracking dogs and off-road ATVs to search the shoreline. A state Highway Patrol helicopter searched from the air.

Whitaker told rescuers Wednesday night that the group, all from Halifax County, was lost and unfamiliar with the area. They were returning from a basketball tournament in Northampton County when they apparently took the wrong turn.
