RALEIGH, N.C. — One couple's travel plans turned into tragedy in Durham County on Thursday night.
An elderly woman is in the hospital following a traffic accident that took her husband's life.
Charles Vaughn was driving the truck that was involved in the collision with the couple's SUV at the Interstate 40/Interstate 540 split.
"Our heart just goes out to the family," Vaughn said.
Police say Lonnie and Marion Brooks were headed to RDU to catch a flight. Lonnie Brooks got off on the I-540 exit by mistake. When he tried to get back on I-40 east, he collided with Vaughn's truck.
Lonnie Brooks died. Marion Brooks is in critical condition.
Vaughn was not seriously hurt.
