Film puts face on poverty in NC

— A documentary about the faces of poverty in the Tar Heel state was screened Saturday in Rocky Mount for an audience of community leaders, activists and concerned citizens who met to talk about solutions.

The stories told in the 26-minute film were collected in the cities and counties of North Carolina during the Truth and Hope Poverty Tour, sponsored by the NAACP, the North Carolina Justice Center and the AARP among others.

"If banks are too big to fail, then human beings created by God are too precious to fail," said Dr. William Barber II, president of the NAACP of North Carolina.

Organizers say poverty is an ill that cannot be ignored.

Gene Nichol, director of the University of North Carolina Center on Poverty, studies the problem. "Four out of 10 of our kids of color live in poverty. I think that is an admission of failure on our behalf," he said.

"We are not going to get better treatment for those at the bottom until we all demand it," he said.

Organizers of the tour and film say they will rally and rage until their message is heard.

sabby06, the thing is that white people don't give money to Barber because they don't need "leaders". Therefore he does not care about poor white kids. He doesn't care about "colored" kids either, but he can make money off their parents.

trutarblu, that's not going to happen. The sperm donors don't HAVE to steal when they get out of jail; they CHOOSE to steal, and they don't deliver it to feed their kids. Low-class women won't stop having their babies until we pull the money out from under them. These people do not care about anything but money, think they're superior and "smart" for living off of others. I do not care what happens to them or the future thieves, home invaders, assailants and murderers they push out.

"I suggest that the Reverend and crew address the root of the problem and that is single mothers with a bunch of kids with multiple fathers who contribute nothing."

You are 100% correct! These good for nothing fathers end up in jail and then when they are out have to steal everything to survive.

Women of color need to stop having babies and start getting education and jobs. If they dont they are setting up their family for failure.

No failure on my part (not 'behalf', BTW). I see it as a failure on the part of people of color who live in poverty. Stop blaming everyone but "people of color" for everything they've done to themselves.

I suggest that the Reverend and crew address the root of the problem and that is single mothers with a bunch of kids with multiple fathers who contribute nothing. There is no shortage of poverty programs and they all know how to access them. Drugs, alcohol, ignorance and spending habits result in kids being shortchanged and improperly parented. The dollars and value of free taxpayer goodies going into these households is equal to or exceeds that of working families. NO MORE PROGRAMS!

Does color mean everyone but white?

This is going on while our government sends billions to other countries. We need all of that money here! Help our own first!

its not just kids of "color" that live like this.. its kids of all races that live like this.
