UNC Public Safety officers and Chapel Hill police were called to a shooting near the James T. Hendrick Building at 211 Friday Center Drive at about 7:40 a.m. The building houses administrative offices for the UNC Health Care system.
The victims are identified as Shennel R. McCrimon McKendall, 37, of 612 Mitchell Chapel Road, Pittsboro, and Randy Leverne McKendall, 34, of the same address. The victims were married and reportedly estranged.
Randy McKendall was arrested Wednesday for violating a protective order but he was out on bond when the shooting happened. Shennel McKendall took out a domestic violence order against her estranged husband three weeks ago, but he allegedly violated it twice.
Family members said that the relationship between the two had been strained.
"It's a shock, this is not supposed to happen," said Joan Dark, the victim's aunt.
Police said that Shennel McCrimon McKendall, a receptionist, was walking to the Hedrick Building employment office when an altercation ensued with Randy McKendall, an unemployed barber.
Randy McKendall then allegedly shot and killed Shennel McCrimon McKendall, before turning the gun on himself. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified the weapon as a 9-mm handgun.
Counselors were made available for co-workers and other employees who work in the Hedrick Building, UNC Health Care officials reported. The employment office was closed soon afterward.
