A man shot in the back near a school early Wednesday is improving, but authorities are still searching for the Vance County man suspected in the shooting.

Investigators say Matthew Roberson shot Christopher Harris in the back early Wednesday morning near a Middlesburg elementary school.

Sheriff Thomas Breedlove said he believes Roberson was actually aiming for Harris' brother. Breedlove says the shooting stems from a dispute over a girlfriend.

They say Roberson ran into the woods near Flemmingtown Road.

Harris underwent surgery at the hospital. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening. He was in critical condition until midday Friday and is now in stable condition.
