Hoke County Sheriff's Department Chief McDuffy said that one jailer has been terminated. Another jailer involved might be terminated later, McDuffy said.
McDuffy is not releasing the names of either jailer or date of termination. No further details are being released at this time.
Hoke County sheriff's officials said at the time of Barefoot's escape that a jailer was assisting another inmate with a medical problem when Barefoot, who shared a cell with that inmate, somehow overpowered two jailers and took the keys to one of jailer's Ford Explorer.
Barefoot then went on a 16-day adventure that took him throughout the state before eventually being recaptured in Gaston County. During his more than two weeks on the run, investigators say, William Barefoot drove hundreds of miles, walked for days and stole to survive.
Barefoot was serving an 84-year sentence for shooting a Scotland County sheriff's officer in 2001.
