Escapee May Be Heading To Chapel Hill

After hiding in the woods for 10 days, investigators said William Glenn Barefoot, 40, broke into the Cumberland County home of Evan Wise Jr. and Alisha Valdez. They said the brother and sister went to their home on Strickland Bridge Road Tuesday and found Barefoot inside.

"He confronted them with a knife, tied them up and stole their personal property and vehicle," said Maj. Sam Pennica of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

The rental car, a 2005 Dodge Magnum station wagon, is described as either dark blue or black with Florida license plate

Barefoot asked the siblings for directions to Chapel Hill. He wanted to know if Raleigh was the fastest way to get there.

"He's trying to see his family and he don't want to live no more. He don't want to go back to prison," daughter Miranda Barefoot said.

Barefoot told WRAL she is scheduled to have surgery and her father was planning to visit her at UNC Hospitals.

"He knows I'm facing surgery and could be paralyzed by this. He wants to see me," she said.

Miranda Barefoot and her brother, Michael, are concerned their father's run will not end there.

"We're thinking he's going to try and committ suicide by an officer, because he doesn't have a gun," Michael Barefoot said. "He told my uncle he was going to act like he had a gun."

Authorities believe Barefoot may now be clean-shaven, wearing a blue denim shirt, jeans and gray shoes.

"If you see him, just let him come up to the house and we can get him to surrender. We can get him to surrender," Michael Barefoot said.

"Dad, we love you. We forgive you for the mistakes that you did. We just want you to surrender and make it all OK," Miranda Barefoot said.

Barefoot escaped from jail on Oct. 25 by overpowering a guard with Mace. Authorities have been searching areas around Moore and Cumberland Counties for several days. Barefoot was serving an 84-year sentence for shooting a Scotland County sheriff's officer in 2001.
