Authorities: Custody Dispute Leads To Chatham Murder

PITTSBORO, N.C. — Chatham County investigators are asking for the public's help in their search for a murder suspect.
Authorities say 32-year-old Brian Marshall shot a couple at their home south of Pittsboro Wednesday night. Richard Kelly, 47, died. His wife, 46-year-old Melody Kelly, was rushed to UNC Hospitals. Her condition is not available right now.
Investigators say the shooting appears to have resulted from child custody issues between Marshall and the victims.
Court records show Marshall had joint custody of a 3-year-old child with the girl's mother. The papers also reveal the victim, Richard Kelly, was a convicted sex offender and that Marshall had concerns Kelly would hurt his daughter, too.
According to the court records, Marshall said Kelly once told him, "I wouldn't trust me with the baby either."
Authorities say the 3-year-old is OK and was not in the house at the time of the shooting.
Marshall lives in Durham with his current wife, but he has apparently been on the run since the shooting Wednesday night. Authorities believe he may be out of the state.
The Chatham County Sheriff's Office said Marshall may be driving a white 1991 Honda CRX with North Carolina license tag
